performance tweaks

I was reading up on Joomla performance & came across the below points.
I would like to know from you if it is OK to make those recommended changes & any risks at all.

1)Enable Joomla Caching
from System -> Global Configuration -> System -> Cache Settings
turn Cache option to 'ON - Conservative caching'

//Currently state is set to OFF - Caching disabled

-Also to complete this, I need to enable system cache plugin from
Extensions -> Plugin Manager -System - Cache

//Currently I see this as disabled.

2)Enable Joomla Compression
System -> Global Configuration -> Server
Set 'Gzip Page compression' to Yes

//currently I see this as set to No

Is it safe to make the above changes? (I ask because they weren't enabled with the defaults & hence I haven't changed them yet)

Yes, everything should be fine if you enable caching on your site.
Those settings are disabled by default in Joomla so we left them as they are.
