Thank you Arthur, I have already seen those articles. My problem is that my language Icelandic is not available for Joomla. (should consider doing something about that :) )
I was hoping there would be another way to make a website multilingual. One question:
If I use, say, Italian or Irish (for the abbreviations) would all the administrator language be in that language?
Also could I use English and change the abbreviattion from EN to IS?

Hello,
You can set different language in front-end and in back-end.
As you like.

If language is not available, the best way is to prepare own translations, please check articles :
community.joomla.org/translations/joomla-3-translations.html
